Summary:

The Environmental Engineer 2 supports plant environmental strategic and operational environmental initiatives at the Jeffersonville site by planning, facilitating, and communicating in alignment with regulatory requirements, plant direction and L-H Battery environmental business plan to ensure plant environmental compliance and achieve plant environmental performance (energy, water, and waste) targets.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and interpret department & plant environmental performance to comply with government regulations and company standards as well as other environmental obligations.
  • Assist in plant environmental communication and collaboration with both internal (depts or management within plant, Communications, Legal) and external (other OEM's, trade associations, government agencies, general public) stakeholders for awareness of status, benchmarking, critical issue escalation, initiation of necessary action items, and promotion & diffusion of environmental programs, and protection & promotion of the L-H Battery brand.
  • Monitor and evaluate current environmental regulatory conditions and changes to the regulatory landscape to set plant direction & strategy; ensure environmental programs are developed to address changes.
  • Report plant environmental performance (energy/water/waste/CO2) metrics, coordinate and implement plant environmental business plan themes and projects/permits by applying PDCA to reduce risk and improve environmental characteristics.
  • Review, as the environmental advocate, plant projects and change points against the L-H Battery and plant environmental standards for environmental impact to promote & ensure environmental policy and direction are achieved.
  • Plan and review routine environmental compliance (air, water, waste) and performance (KPI's, metrics) activities, reports and permits, ensuring appropriate countermeasures are implemented and effective; review and approve plant environmental metrics reports to ensure accuracy and target achievement.
  • Identify and plan for plant environmental budget (resources) to properly execute effective and efficient plant environmental management programs.
  • Provide guidance of plant environmental standards, systems, methods, and procedures to meet government regulation and company standards as well as other environmental obligations.
  • Disseminate environmental knowledge within the plant; create and execute training to ensure associate competence and success in meeting environmental targets/goals/objectives.
  • Check effectiveness & viability of plant data management systems and approve their use as tools to efficiently track and manage environmental compliance and performance.
  • Assist and approve contractor SOW(s) (Scope of Work) for waste management, waste water operations, water treatment operations (as applicable), stack testing, consultants, utilities, energy procurement service provider, and support environmental strategies/requirements; periodically evaluate contractors to ensure work or service provided maintains adherence to standards / procedures.
  • Facilitate L-H Battery internal (plant, department) and external (government agencies, third party ISO 14001) audit programs to confirm effectiveness and identify gaps & opportunities for improvements in the environmental program.
  • Coordinate and implement timely department countermeasures addressing environmental audit & performance gaps to ensure effectiveness of environmental program.
  • Identify and implement improvement ideas and projects to reduce L-H Battery environmental impact. 
  • Act as liaison between dept and plant environmental team for dept projects and change points to ensure environmental policy and direction is implemented and achieved.
  • Create and perform environmental training content and assign/track department & plant training requirements to improve associate competence.
  • Support the development and deployment of data management systems to efficiently track and manage environmental compliance/performance.
  • Implement innovative solutions to drive improvements and be recognized as a leader in environmental sustainability.
  • Communicate with L-H Battery’s EHS colleagues from parent companies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Engineering, Environmental Science, or science-related degree or equivalent related experience

 

Experience:

  • 4-6 years of environmental experience

Additional Requirements:

  • This role requires up to 10% of travel (domestic, with potential international)
